Question about moving apartments and renewal contract issue.

I think I saw a similar post here, but was 11 years old. I am planning and have already secured a new apartment. My current apartment’s contract ends April 25th. I plan to move out a couple weeks before that date. The current apartment owners demand that I am to pay both the renewal fee, plus 2 months rent. They say I was to give them 2 months prior notice if I did not intend on renewing (I admit, my fault for not checking fully the current contract before hand), though on the renewal documents they sent out to me, it said I had to pay by March 24th if I intend to stay (which I did not, so I have not paid as of yet) else it would be considered that I was not to continue living at said apartment.
Has anyone been through this, or had a similar experience and can give any advice? I don’t mind if I am to pay the extra 2 months, but the renewal fee on top of that is killer…

  1. Always include the contract type when asking a question like this. The law is very different if you have a fixed term or regular lease.
