Tip travelling Japan-UK around Xmas time?

Any tips RE this, such as how far in advance should one book, is there an optimum time when flights are at their cheapest, is there any logical way to go about this or is it just a case of surrendering completely to extortionate prices (I’m just assuming they will be). FYI flying to Edinburgh would be best but England is also fine.

  1. I’ve always found that flying out of Japan (albeit not to the UK) has had advantageous prices for a flight departing **on** December 25th. That’s all I’ve got to offer.

  2. I did it last year and booked about 6 weeks before. The plane was empty on Dec 25th and I got back in time for Xmas Dinner.

Premier economy was the same price as regular flying out. Much more room and better food. On the way back, I asked at the desk and got an upgrade relatively cheaply. For me, worth it on a 15hr flight. I left the UK on Jan 31st and the plane was busier but still not full.

  3. I booked last year around May, travelled on Dec 17th and stayed until Jan 2nd. Myself and one child (7 y.o) via HK (8 hour layovers!) to Manchester cost around 235,000 yen in total for the two of us. I booked via Booking.com and although flights were moved a bit between booking and travel time, it was manageable.
