As of October 1st all instructors on employment contracts 20hrs/week (27 lessons/week) or more will be enrolled in Shakai Hoken.
This is what the union has wanted all these years. Just wonder if instructors really want it or not. Interesting to see what opinions are after teachers get the drop in take home pay. 14-15% for premiums depending on age.

I mean, everyone MUST be enrolled in health insurance, and shakai hoken is generally cheaper than kokuminkenkouhoken. So I’m not sure what the downside would be, yeah some more money comes out of your paycheck, but then you don’t have to pay kokuminkenkouhoken anymore which should be a net savings for most people.
The only instructors who would not want Shakaihoken would be the lowlifes who haven’t been paying pension/health insurance (because now they’re being forced to)
Legitimate, decent people would all be in favor of shakaihoken
Their opinions are probably not as strong as those, like myself, who were hit with the back amount at some point in their Japan living…
Did you know that being on shakai hoken is actually cheaper than paying it all by yourself? It is. It also covers more types of procedures.
In addition, your company will FINALLY be forced to pay into your pension. That means more ¥¥¥ for you when you retire.
This is particularly a good deal for those of you who have decided you love Japan so much that you want to live here forever. Alternatively, you can always get private health insurance – IF you can afford it; it’s usually far more expensive than shakai hoken.
For the rest of you who will leave in a year, yeah, it’s kind of a rip-off… but were you looking for a free ride? Most countries have some form of NHS which everyone has to pay into regardless, and if you are American the deal you get in Japan is fucking sweet compared with the NOTHING you get in the US along with much higher drug prices.
The only difference is that the payments will come out of your paycheck monthly instead of getting a fat bill in the mail that you have to remember to pay. That’s it.

If you’re here for the short term, you should want it because it’ll be better for the pension payout you get when you leave.
If you’re here for the long term, and/or if you have dependents, you should want it because it’s undoubtedly cheaper than paying for kokuminhoken which is a ripoff that should only be forced on those running small businesses, not people legitimately working.
This is a good thing.
If you don’t want it because you’re not paying for kokumin, enjoy the massive karma wave coming your way.
Shakai Hoken means you get paid a portion of your wage if you’re sick or injured. It also means you only pay once for your primary employment – insurance premiums for kokumin Kenko hoken come out of any salary your earn.
And then there’s coverage for your spouse or dependent on shakai hoken.
There isn’t any downside to it.
Nova taking the difference out of the employees’ pay doesn’t detract from the value of the insurance. That’s a stain on Nova.
I wonder how it will affect Nova. Will it survive? I imagine they will find a way
Yes, I would want shakai hoken if I didn’t have it. I would be paying more for health insurance + pension if I didn’t have it, and I would be getting less coverage.

Just linking to a post in the twin thread giving some math and explaining that even in the event you were to pay more (depend of your salary) in the end out of the benefit (tax reduction, better pension, paid sick/maternity leave) you win.

I’m more interested in seeing how NOVA are going to pass the cost onto the teacher like they always do.
– Push the gyomu itaku contracts even harder
– Break the company up into sub companies for each region with under a certain amount of employees per region so they are exempt
– Make the pay per lesson even lower

Either way the teachers are going to get fucked somehow
