I need a new kanji study program.

I’ve been with WaniKani for years and found it to be quite useful. Yesterday, the developers rolled out an awful “update” that makes the entire site sluggish and less functional than it was.

So, I want to migrate to another kanji study app. I don’t care for card decks. Could I get some recommendations for a kanji/vocabulary site that works well?

  1. Sounds like you are already pretty far with kanji you might not need something like that anymore? Like, just use vocab to learn kanji.

If you want another thing which leads you through learning Kanji without vocab though, you could give https://kanji.koohii.com/ a spin, it’s free at any rate, it’s basically like RTK but with crowdsourced stories

another route would be to get a book such as RTK or KKLC (that is, Remembering the Kanji or The Kodansha Kanji Learner’s Course)

  2. Kanji Garden maybe? I haven’t used it myself but it seemed somewhat similar to Wani Kani (which I also haven’t used) when I was looking into it.

You could try Ringotan app but that’s more focused on writing rather than beginning with components or readings.

Personally I use JPDB and learn the kanji as they’re needed for the vocabulary in the decks.

  3. I just downloaded Tsurukame and Jakeipuu, they seem like good third-party apps to access WaniKani. Since they’re not using the web browser they’re not susceptible to webpage changes, and they have some extra features like a different UI and an undo button.

you dont need a ‘kanji study program’

you need to start using japanese

  5. I (lvl 7) personally like the new UI update. The only thing stressing me is not being able to use enter in lessons xD
Recently I started using a script that adds pitch accent to each word’s pronunciation (works fine after update still).

  6. Glad I’m(lvl 11) not the only one who isn’t a fan. I feel like the font is smaller on reviews, you can’t use enter on lessons, there’s no end screen after your reviews telling you the percentage and what moved up and down anymore. Also my scripts for toggling answers correct when I can’t spell or hit the wrong letters doesn’t work anymore! :’)

  7. Just a little idea if you really like the wanikani card, you can download them on anki to continue there. Probably painfull, you’ll have to start in the last level you was, but it maybe suit your wish ?

    Good luck
