Is the five lakes area still interesting/cool/”worth it” if it is going to rain the whole time?

We will be in Japan in early May and want to stop at Lake Kawaguchiko for two nights, but I’ve read that that area is amazing if the weather is decent but not necessarily if not. We’re interested in exploring towns too and not just seeing Mt. Fuji (though that’s definitely a goal). Should we consider going elsewhere if the forecast is looking to be pretty rainy in the five lakes area when we are there?

Edit: to clarify, also doing two nights in Hakone, if that changes things
