Shimonoseki and Kokura could easily swallow up a day. Visit the Karato Ichiba Market if you’re up for some good sushi and seafood while Moji has an attractive port area. Kokura is also a good experience for that grittier charm of Japan, kinda like Detroit without the violence.
[Yutoku Inari Shrine](https://www.japan-guide.com/e/e8390.html) is a very doable destination, and can be done alone or paired with a very rushed day trip to Nagasaki if you want since it’s on the way. (Or just on the way to Nagasaki) It’s a cool inari shrine (lots of torii) and has a nice garden as well.
[Karatsu city](https://www.japan-guide.com/e/e8375.html) is a castle town whose castle has good views of the coast. There’s also a small museum with interesting festival floats, as well as a scenic pine tree grove.
Arita (Ceramic Museum, old pottery district, old kiln replicas) and Okawachiyami (pottery workshops and shops, kilns) are good for porcelain lovers.
Yoshinogari-koen is a great reconstruction of village from Yayoi period (the time that Japanese Islands were first mentioned in Chinese records).
Takeo Onsen is a great onsen town with public bathhouses, an onsen museum in one of the former ones (Takeo Onsen Shinkan, building by the same architect that designed Tokyo Station), teamLab exhibits at Mifuneyama Rakuen.
1. The Reclining Buddha!!! at Nazoin Temple and
2. Daizaifu Shrine (God of Learning, because I’m studying I loved it) it’s a beautiful, beautiful space.
If you have/rent a car then Oita, Aso area, Kumamoto, saga is easily doable. Sadly Fukuoka should be the hub but the best places in Kyushu are by car beyond Fukuoka city. There are frequent busses to all the other areas but the transportation from then onwards is not great.
Personally going to the Aso area (daikanbou) and just going to a nearby onsen in the mountains and comeback or even beppu area.
If by train then yanagawa is a quick day trip too.
Munakata and the island Ooshima is highly recommended too.
I remember when my host family took me to Nokonoshima, the island of flowers. It was absolutely gorgeous walking through the gardens and having a picnic by the sea.
