IPA in Japan.

Hey everyone,

Looking for a reasonably priced source for IPA. Been to goodbeer.jp but it’s a little absurd paying 6-7 bucks for a beer. Anyone out there with a secret squirrel source they’re willing to share?

Thanks,

Jay

  1. If you want really good IPA’s or import stuff then you are going to be paying through the nose for it.

If you want domestic then Aooni, Cap Crow, Orion IPA and Lupulin Nectar are good options.

  2. What kind of beer exactly are you looking for? Japanese? Foreign? Big maker or obscure?

Goodbeer is fine for smaller Japanese brews – they carry some that are fairly hard to find.

  3. Check Kawaba beer online. That’s what they’re famous for. They’ve got website you can order online.

  4. Ao’oni (青鬼) is decent. 250-300yen 350ml. Blue can with cloudy nightsky and a white smiley face

Available in well equipped supermarkets and specialty shops near you

  5. Bro if you think you can get a proper ipa in japan for under 1,000 especially at a bar you are in for some trouble

  6. If you’re planning to stay more than one year, use Furusato Nozei. It’s money that you will at anyway, but now you can get a monthly beer box for “donating.”

  7. costco ipa mix pack was pretty dang good. there was also a local craft beer that had 800yen imperial crafts

  8. If there is a Aeon Liquor near you they are fairly cheap for cans/bottles. Cheaper than the more well known import shops by a few hundred yen. At least at my local spot.

I can only really stand ise kadoya for domestic beers. Still searching for a few I heard of here previously.

  9. Baird. It is one of the first craft brewers in Japan. Multiple taprooms. Good stuff direct from the source. That said, you get what you pay for.

  10. Cost performance:

Yamaya has 3×1000 usually for brew dog. They usually have their standard IPA, session IPA, Elvis Juice and Hazy Jane. Mix and match for 1000 is a good deal.

yona yona is a pale, but it’s very good for the price. Probably the best cost performance beer in Japan for the quality. They (YaHo brewing) also have a very nice golden ale. 300jpy or a bit less in the can…I think 273 for yona yona off the top of my head.

Going up a notch: Minoh IPA, Daisen G, Isakadoya

I know you want to find a Cost performance IPA but it’s worth mentioning that NomCraft in Wakayama are making some of the best IPA’s right now. They sell online and their mixed 6/12 pack is really good but I think is about 550-600 per bottle with shipping.

—-I shouldn’t know this much about booze.

  11. Goose Island on Amazon is a decent IPA and not badly priced. There are a lot of bad IPAs made locally but a few nice ones are around as well. I just ordered a case of Yona Yona Ale. It’s a pale ale, not an IPA, but it’s nearly half the price of my favorite, Brewdog Punk IPA. Life is a trade-off.

  12. Piggybacking off this but for Porters. Love em Tokyo Black is servicable, but I wish I understood where to find more in Japan.

  13. Stupid thing, but just check around at all stores in your area, big and small, and you might be surprised. I’m in a non-major city, and various big named stores sell some rather interesting beer sometimes. The biggest kicker I’ve seen is a small, local meat store that also sells some local veggies as well… and then has quite a substantial wall of Japanese craft beer and some hard to find imports. Like, daaaamn. The owner just happens to be a beer lover.

  14. Seijo Ishii usually has a selection of craft beers, including many IPAs. If you want import beer like Stone IPA, be prepared to pay premium for it (750 yen per can minimum).
