Working for an American company with Student Visa?

I’m currently applying for a student visa through ISI Harajuku. I’m employed by an engineering company in the USA, and would have the option to do remote work.

Does a student visa allow part time work if it’s for a non-Japanese company? My company has an office in Tokyo, so I could transfer to the Japan office formally if that is an issue.

Edit: I have asked ISI and the Embassy in the USA, and they directed me to the Immigration Bureau in Tokyo. I’m going to call, but curious if anyone else has information or experience with this

Yes, the location of your employer does not matter for immigration purposes.

If this is an option than both you and your employer may prefer it, as it will simplify things for both of you. Remember, income derived from work performed while in Japan is domestically sourced income and is subject to taxes, regardless of where the employer is located or where your pay is being deposited. There are other complications as well. If you are able to transfer to the Japan branch formally, then they will take care of things like your mandatory pension enrollment, health insurance, and other taxes.
