[Itinerary check] Chugoku + Kansai

We’re both in our 20s and are planning to visit Japan this November. This is my third visit to Kyoto and second visit to Hiroshima – everything else is new. Our interests are pretty basic (nature, interesting architecture and cafes, art etc.) We plan to travel out of our backpacks for most of the trip, but may keep a small suitcase with us that we’ll probably forward from Okayama to our Kyoto accomodation. Planning to use the JR Sanyo Sanin pass for the first week and ICOCA for the second.

**Questions:**

1. Are any of these days too packed, and is there a better way of arranging them to reduce travel time?
2. Is it possible to have suitcases sent to baggage storage desks i.e. the one at Kyoto station?
3. Is 1.5 days enough time on Naoshima Island to see the main sights? We’ll be on foot + shuttle bus.
4. Could we add on dinner in Osaka to the end of a Nara daytrip or is this too ambitious?
5. Are there any opportunities to include kabuki theatre in our itinerary? Minamiza theatre appears to only have showings in early December based on previous years.
6. Most of our trip is sightseeing – are there any unique activities or experiences that would be worth adding? I’ve come across a couple (Betty Smith custom jeans experience, Aohota Jam Deck etc.) but I’m wondering if there’s something I’ve missed.

Thank you in advance!

  1. Highly recommend doing an overnight on Miyajima Island with one of your extra days. It’s a 40 min ferry from downtown Hiroshima. Might be a bit cold by November but the oysters are amazing and the deer are cute and the view from atop the mountain cable car is one of my favorite views in all Japan.

I really did not enjoy Kurashiki. One of the most tourist-y places I visited in all Japan. Just long fake-authentic shopping streets, and the art museums I recall weren’t anything special. if you’re into impressionism art, I highly recommend stopping at the Hiroshima Prefectural Museum of Art, weirdly enough. One of the better prefectural art museums in Japan imo.

I haven’t done Shikoku but this sounds like a lot of travel to all the islands, and from what I’ve read most of the artsy islands are similar to each other and not super impressive (like you’ll see the famous pumpkin etc but there isn’t much beyond Instagram spots). Might be worth figuring out 1-3 places to target, or base yourself in Takamatsu for a few nights and do day trips via ferry.

In Kyoto I always recommend this okonomiyaki izakaya place — might favorite in all japan: Chacha stand Shichijō-shinmachi ちゃちゃスタンド七条新町店 @ 140-2 Atarashicho, Shimogyo Ward, Kyoto, 600-8308 / 〒600-8308 京都府京都市下京区新シ町140-2. 10 min walk from Kyoto station, might be a nice quick dinner after one of your kansai day trips.
