Hi !
I’m a 24 Y-o french who’s been living in Osaka for around 6 months. I got a part time job in a wine bar right now, and my boss really seems like he is okay to hire me as a true employee so that I can get a work visa, but he told me I’d need to pass the OTAFF certification, basically a test that would certify my capabilities to prepare food and things like that.
I was just wondering if it was really necessary since I read online that it’s never an obligation to have it to be hired, but that could just be for japanese people, and I can imagine that to get me a certified worker visa, I’d need a certification.
So next question is, does anyone have experience about it ? Like how hard it is, how to prepare for it, this kind of thing !

Thanks for your help !

What is your current residence status?
Being hired in a restaurant as a cook or similar may well fall under the guise of the “技能” / skilled labor SOR, in which case experience and licensing requirements generally apply
If you search for “ワイン ソムリエ åœ¨ç•™è³‡æ ¼” you can find some information with regards to what is generally required.

Where did you read this?
It is required if you’ll be changing your visa. That being said the test is piss easy as long as you have an adequate Japanese reading ability. If you’ve ever taken a food handler test in your home country it’s that + “In Japan we treat customers with the most respect because that’s super Japanese”
