Just out of curiosity, what speed would you consider appropriate on the highway in your prefecture? What about too fast?
Most areas I believe the legal speed is 80km. Towards Miyagi prefecture, I’ve seen 120km posted.
But what is the speed that drivers are actually driving?
In and around Tokyo the set speed is 80km and some 60km but for the most part people are driving slightly over 100km. Anything over 120km I think would be considered excessive.
What about your prefecture?

And I wouldn’t call everything above 120 excessive. After moving here as a German, that is slower than my “slow cruising speed” back home
From a “safety driver” point of view, I consider 150 to be safe.
But from a “safe from tickets” point of view, I’d keep it at 120.
Our area cars usually go between 90-120 regardless of what the sign says.
What I consider too fast depends on alot of things like what car you’re driving, weather, road condition, traffic conditions, road gradients, curves, etc. There’s no generic answer for what consider excessive.
A threshold for speed cameras in Japan is set at a minimum of 39 km/h (24 mph) above the limit on an expressway and a minimum of 29 km/h (18 mph) above the limit on other streets, where drivers will face criminal charges instead of traffic infractions. This is due to legal precedents dating back to 1969 restricting police from filming an individual unless a criminal offence is immediately being committed.
Most highways are 100, 80 in urban areas. 10 over is fine.
The “safest” speed is whatever let’s you flow with traffic. That said, the speed limit on Hokkaido toll roads is 80kph in summer, but everyone drives 100-120.
The universal truth:
Everybody slower than you is an idiot.
Everybody faster than you is a maniac.
Some parts of Saitama and Gunma is also 120
But going to Shizuoka and Aichi, is 80
Most of people will drive around 100 to 110
Everyone drives 100-120 where I live.
My prefecture it is 120km, but once they cross the prefecture line the posted speed limit drops to 100km. People either ignore it or don’t pay attention to the drop in the speed limit and they get ticketed by the police based on what I have seen on 警察２４時.
Motorway? Im usually sitting at 150
Where is everyone seeing 100 and 120 speed limits 😩 I need to go there. I seriously didn’t buy an R8 because I felt it was a waste because the speed limits are so low.
