(Exchange student) In need of router for WiFi in dorm (recommendations)

Hello,

Im doing a study abroad in Tohoku University. My room provides me with a Ethernet cable port, however, I don’t have an Ethernet cable or a WiFi router. I heard most WiFi routers will only be in Japanese I and will not have the option to switch languages. Is this true? Would anyone be able to recommend me any particular WiFi routers that are reliable, work well and are fairly easy to setup (or have good guides to set them up) I don’t mind spending more if it will work better (as long as the prices isn’t suuuper expensive). And lastly I’d like to ask for a recommendation what store(s) I could buy these items at.

Thank you in advance!

The most basic ones, yes. But more advanced ones will often have English options.

Usually there’s not much you need to setup, and the most basic ones doesn’t really have that many options, so English shouldn’t really be necessary. You can probably find the field for SSID and password if you want to change that. Most routers will be plug and play if all you need is WiFi.

If you want more configurability, you want a better router, which often have English options.

Go to any yodobashi, BIC camera or Yamaha denki etc if you want to buy in store.

I’ve had a basic NEC router that works well (only Japanese), and a TP-Link with English option.

  2. Just look on Amazon, should say there, in English, if they have English language available.

You could do that first and then check out Mercari or something if you want something cheaper although it will prob be in Japanese.

Most routers these days are just plug and play really, just connect power and the LAN cable and connect to the default SSID name/pw. Also considering you usually access the router settings through your browser you can just use your browser’s translation function to get it in English if it doesn’t support it.

  3. I got us an Asus SOHO router, because the cheapo ISP supplied one was basically shit and didn’t work properly anyway, it’s UI can be set to English.

Look on Amazon or manufacturer site first, check the specs, and either buy there or look for the same model in Yodobashi Camera or similar store.

You can buy ethernet cables at the same store. Don’t just buy one.

While you’re there, if you’re using travel adapters for your computers, look for a replacement power cable too.
