Is Tobira 1 Beginning Japanese a good self studying book?

I’ve been looking for a good self studying book for a while now but can’t decide which one to get. Which book helped you with self study?

  1. Note: OP means the new beginner-level tobira, not the classic intermediate tobira

less of us have used the new one

  2. I have the new one! It’s pretty much the same as Genki but I enjoy the media aspects available on their website.

  3. I used Genki because at the time Tobira just meant the intermediate textbook all those deleted posts were getting confused about. But I like Intermediate Tobira a hell of a lot more than Genki, and at a glance through the Beginner one, it looks like it’s similar to Genki but I’d probably like it a bit better. But I haven’t used it.

I think Genki just has so much online inertia at this point people default to that, and never really give other books much thought. Not for any particularly good reason.

[There was a pretty nice review here a year ago](https://www.reddit.com/r/LearnJapanese/comments/oh1p9j/tobira_beginner_japanese_1_textbook_photos_and/)

There’s the other benefit that if you think the style of a book like Tobira: Intermediate is what you want to do later, this would integrate more smoothly. It’s not a huge deal, the “gap” people talk about is mostly imaginary, but I know these books were designed to line up exactly because they’re the same publisher.

  4. I have used Genki a little bit and haven’t seen Tobira that much. But it feels like Genki should be the better because of all the materials there is on the internet (tokini andy for example on youtube, he also talk about the different and similarity of this books in one of his video)

  5. I haven’t seen the beginner Tobira series but I have seen the intermediate Tobira and just don’t like flipping back and forth for the vocabulary as well as decoding the weird programming language in their grammar points. Personally, I’d look into genki 1+2 into Quartet.

  6. I bought the 1 and 2 they published recently and would say it’s pretty good. I like audio material and grammar videos too since he keeps it simple and short. I can’t compare it to genki since I didn’t try it though.
