Moving to Japan and need relocation provider recommendations

Looking for experiences with companies who do relocation from the US to Japan.

I am familiar with some but that was years ago and my info is out of date.

This would be for a personally-financed trip and not a company-sponsored expat package.

  1. We are currently using Kuroneko Yamato. They have different packages. We’re happy so far but is early in the process.

  2. Thanks so far, and yes, I know it is expensive, and from what I’m hearing but no surprise, is that due to Covid, more expensive than it was.

I also heard up to 6 months to deliver, which is about double from my prior experience.

  3. Per the sub rules:

    > If you research online and still can’t find the answer to your question, please present the information you’ve already discovered.

  4. On our end afters lots of calculations we found out that the cheapest option would be to store our things here (Canada) and buy everything over with the company allocation when we’re in Japan. Also note that most of North American appliances and furniture will not fit in Japanese apartments / homes. We’re basically moving out with 12 suitcases. If the trip is not sponsored by your company, how do you intend to get a visa?

  5. I just moved here to Japan.

Kuroneko Yamato quote in my case for packing and shipping of a 20ft container worth of stuff was over $30k. If you have that much stuff I wouldn’t recommend them.

In the end I went with shippingmygoods.com . The process isn’t complete and I don’t have my stuff yet, but it looks it will cost $10k. ( I packed all the stuff myself )

I tried to get Yamato to let me pack my own container and they wouldn’t allow it. If you have less stuff their boxes you pack yourself are a good option though.

I called many other moving companies and got quotes. All of them were much higher for a container worth of goods.
