Anyone used the book 日本語読み書きのたね ?

Recently I have finished learning みんなの日本語2 at the language school I go to, and after they put me through some rigorous testing (even had a speaking component) for some reason they’ve chosen 日本語読み書きのたね as the next book to use. I thought they would pick Tobira, Integrated Approach, Quartet or even those JLPT drill books.

Out of curiosity I thought I would ask.. has anyone ever used this book.. or even seen it lol

  1. From description, it appears to be a pre-intermediate book, similar to 中継へ行こう book I used. There is typically a larger gap between MNN II and MNN intermediate book. Most language classes in Japan tend to use a pre-intermediate book before moving to intermediate level.

Edit: Also, places that use MNN, tend to use MNN intermediate level books after pre-intermediate book. MNN intermediate level books are slightly higher level and difficult compared to intermediate books you mentioned.

  2. Indeed MNN is a very popular beginner series in Japanese language schools.

IME there are no super-popular textbooks at the intermediate levels, and schools vary a lot. A few schools use So-Matome as the main textbooks, but that is more test prep than classroom textbook. Some schools prepare their own materials. The head teacher of my language school thought that there were no intermediate Japanese textbooks that were as well-done as MNN main beginner books 1 & 2.

I didn’t see Tobira & Integrated Approach in Japanese language schools of my friends. But they are sold in a lot of Tokyo bookstores. And I know they are used in some western university courses. A lot of people on the forums use them for self study.
