Yakushima: no car, have I messed up?

Hi all,

I’m travelling around Japan and getting to Yakushima today. I had a big plan to hire a car when I got there but after finally doing some research on the matter a couple of days out I’ve realised that during spring break hiring a car is pretty much impossible as a last minute task. They’re booked out solid.

Has anyone here done Yakushima before without a car? I was hoping to do the Jomon Sugi hike on Monday but is it impossible to get to the trail start without a car?

I know I’ve messed up here but I’m hoping I’m not completely screwed…

  1. You can get there by bus. You’ll have to take two different buses. The one that goes to Jomonsugi runs three times a day.

The bus timetable is only in Japanese. Try Google Maps for the schedule.

Or you can join a tour.

  2. Try hitchhiking. Ive gotten picked up almost immediately on yakushima.

For everything else try to use the bus.

Ebike doesn’t have enough battery to get up on the inside of the island. The roasts are too steep.

  3. Managed to hire a car after all! Thank you for all of the suggestions they helped keep me from panicking.

  4. I’ve done Yakushima without a car. Not exactly convenient, but you can still get to Jomonsugi and the other tourist areas by bus. There’s also taxis on the island but they are quite expensive.
