Yes to both essays and article! I found watching lots of tv news (I recommend NHK) and reading newspapers helps a lot. And for your reference, Japanese EJU is more of N1 level. The reading part is more difficult than N1 but that’s my personal opinion.
From my experience: do EJU past problems until you are sick of it is the best way to study. You get used to the problems and figure out what trick work best for you.
