Koyasan is amazing. I recommend staying at a shukubo.
I got off at that station to hike the rest of the way, and then proceeded to walk 30 minutes in the wrong direction. But it’s a nice hike either way!
One sign and five or six alphabets on a rural mountain train station. English (Roman alphabet), Japanese (Kanji, Katakana, Hiragana), Korean (hangul) are very small under the English. Serves Korean visitors to Japan. Plus numbers which are technically Arabic in origin!! Also appreciate the info-graphic – the bottom edge of the sign shows the elevation of the train at each station.
I LOVE THIS PHOTO.
that train ride is always magical
I felt like a ghibli movie up there, I want to go again!
The cable car going up was really cool
Koyasan is one of the most beautiful and peaceful places on earth
When I was visiting in 2019, Koyasan wasn’t originally on my itinerary. I happened to be browsing my phone on a Shinkansen ride and came across a tourism article about Koyasan.
I rerouted a later portion of our trip, so that we could visit and stay at one of the Buddhist temple lodgings (Ekoin). It was worth the cost of switching plans mid-trip; worth every yen. With that being said, my only regret is that we could only afford (both money, and time-wise) a single night there.
