For the record, I’m talking about BunPO not BunPRO. Their free version barely lets you go through a couple lessons before they start forcing you to pay. Their subscription plans aren’t terrible but they’re no small change either. 40 dollars for a lifetime subscription is a big commitment for some people and they lock pretty much all the lessons and the SRS feature behind a paywall. How am I even supposed to figure out for myself if this is what I want to purchase if I can barely try it out?

If $40 is a lot of money for you then I would recommend just sticking to free resources EVEN IF bunpo ended up being good. There are great free resources for learning japanese grammar like imabi, cure dolly, and tae kim. You don’t need to pay.
I personally find “doesn’t give me sufficient info to make an informed decision” to usually be a sign that I shouldn’t buy something.
Most of these resources go over basically the same stuff in approximately the same order; there’s seldom any strong reason you must have this one particular app/book out of all the possible apps/books.
