New apartment, horrific neighbor

Moved into a decent apartment, nice size and overall I love it….. wellllll, until my Chinese nexf door neighbor started yelling and screaming from 5pm-midnight every night… I have been here for 4 days!
Yesterday i heard him screaming and, I think, punching the walls… tonight he’s going ape shit at his girlfriend (the screaming is still going 2 hours later!)

Any suggestions?
I’m going to go to the housing estate company on Wednesday anyway but complaint wise… should I bother or will nothing positive come of it? 😩😂

Thanks 🍡

  1. The cops in Japan aren’t good for much, but this is something they are good for.

If this fails, talk to the building management, note every time and date of the incident. Record audio from your apartment to share with management. That’s assuming your neighbor is in the same building. I lived in China for a few years and people screamed at each other so loudly, it didn’t matter if they lived in your building, or just in the neighborhood.

  2. When you call the cops, be as modest as possible. “I don’t mind him punching the walls, but it’s noisy and I need to sleep because I need to go to work tomorrow.”

    Edit: typo

  3. Call the police or visit the koban to report this – they will send someone to check up on them and the girlfriend’s safety. Escalating this, as uncomfortable as it might be, is better than staying silent in the hope that they will sort it out.

  4. When I moved into my new place, my neighbor started banging on my wall. I thought the tv was too loud. But then he started banging at noon when I’m walking up the stairs. I had just got back from the hospital so I lost it. Called my management company and landlord and complained like a Karen has never complained.

The guy lied and said I was listening to club music every night. I haven’t even been in the apartment. Because I was staying at the hospital. After I complained, the knocking stopped.

My advice is to tell your manager or landlord company before they do so they are the crazy people. Then police if they don’t do anything.

  5. Curious about why you had to specify they’re Chinese? Surely “Annoying neighbour” would have sufficed.

  6. Just fyi Chinese sometimes speak that to each other as “normal”, so I wouldn’t expect anything bad.

But maybe ask your neighbour personally, that there are too loud?

  7. He was screaming at her well after midnight 🕛😴… thank goodness for ear plugs

  8. Honestly, the quickest, cheapest and easiest way to deal with a bad neighbor is to move out as soon as possible. They have absolutely no reason to change their behavior and your landlord can’t evict them if they’re paying rent.

You should definitely let your landlord know of the situation and call the police every night on your neighbor though, to make things more difficult for them.

  9. You must make a complaint, hopefully it’s to your neighbors misfortune and not yours.

  10. Well, I got to work this morning and my boss gave me a note from the building manager…and I GOT A NOISE COMPLAINT! Wtf

  11. it’s a little concerning how almost no one here (or op) is at all worried about the fact that he’s screaming at his girlfriend and punching walls. Tell the police for his girlfriend. He’s clearly an angry man.

  12. Cops and management are the way to go, but honestly, I lived next to a Chinese woman for several months and she was very loud on the phone every night too. I thought she was screaming therefore probably upset with someone (I thought maybe family problems) then one night I go on her door and ask her to tune it down (nicely). So I start with « I am sorry to ask you because you sound upset but… » and she told me she was just chatting with friends… so maybe Chinese people in general are very loud, and your neighbor isn’t even screaming (in his perception)

  13. For the next 3-5 years, monitor the situation carefully, measure the sound levels, maintain a handwritten diary, and install a seismic meter. Then come back to Reddit and ask for advise 🙂 Or report suspected DV or drug use to the cops.

  14. Call the police.

Tell them that it sounds like your neighbours are murdering each other. This happened at our old old place once, they should send a few of the really big fellas in about 5 minutes.

  15. Call the police and make some complaint to fudousan. It would be better if u can record the noise.

  16. Bang on the door and repeat after me “diu lei lo mo”

    That should sort him out.

  17. Chinese people aren’t Japanese so you can interest with them pretty directly and tell them how you feel and stuff. Try it and see what happens.
