Did I get scammed by Docomo NTT? Slow, non-existent 5G Wi-Fi

I bought the HRO2 5G Wifi router from Docomo just less than 2 weeks ago, and per my contract and their ads, I should be getting speed of more than 200Mbps for downloads (4G) or over 1Gps (5G).

However, from my speed test results, Im getting speeds of 38.4Mbps for download, and for upload 1Mbps.

And its strange, My router connects to 5G whenever Im not using any devices. In other words. The 5G led light on the router is blue, and turns green (meaning 4G) whenever I use any of my connected devices such as Macbook Pro.

If my speeds do not meet the advertised speeds or whats in my contract, am I allowed to get a refund?

  1. I was in your same situation back a couple years ago with Softbank Air. Not getting even 5% of the advertised speed. Only at graveyard hours (2am) I’d get 200Mbps, but even then it was way below advertised. Contacted salesman, and to no one’s surprise they said “well technically it’s *up to* 1Gbps so 40/200Mbps is still within that…” bullshit.

I cancelled within 4 days, turns out I can still cancel free-of-charge if it is within 8 days from usage start date. [Docomo does this too, apparently.](https://www.docomo.ne.jp/support/cancellation_8day/index.html) If you’re still within that period I suggest cancelling it as soon as possible.

  2. Where are you located? Like, central tokyo, or outskirts of saitama? Or bumfuck, tochigi?

Of course, no LTE/5G based service is going to give you constant 200mbps or even anywhere close to 1Gps. But if you’re not somewhere central, even the tower itself might not have that much bandwidth to it, never mind if it’s shared with a bunch of other users at the same time.

If you really need proper speeds, you need to get a hard line, not some wireless/LTE shit. But I’m assuming you already knew that and had no other option available? Which leads me to believe you’re somewhere deep in the woods, which means, you won’t be getting anything near “up to” speeds due to the reasons I explained above.

  3. Yeah, all air 5g products are really not good if you are living in highly congested areas.

  4. try to move it around your apartment. Also use cable network on your computer to test the speed if possible. Try to change the wifi channel via router web.setting from automatic to some static one. Try to use the 5GHz SSID as well as 2.4GHz to see if you’re getting better speed.

  5. Depends on where you are. At my house, I get a constant 500Mbps on 4G, 700 if it catches 5G.

At the station, it drops to about 300Mbps. In Osaka proper, in Umeda? Lucky to get 50Mbps. Can barely tether.

This means it sees a signal, but as soon as it tries to use it, there’s too much radio noise and it drops it. The same thing happens often on smartphones.
