I’ve recently submitted all my documents to apply for permanent residency in Japan, so I’m now playing the waiting game (2-months has passed so far).
However, I need to renew my passport very soon. This would mean I’d need to send my passport back to the UK.
My concern is that my visa (if accepted) will be ready while my passport is being renewed. And I worry I won’t be able to collect it.
So my question is, is it possible me to still collect my visa without my passport?
Immigration told me that I should take out the little piece of paper they staple in the passport during the renewal process if I renew my passport,, but nothing about needing the passport to collect it.
Has anyone has any experience with this?

Why don’t you just renew your passport at the UK embassy?
Immigration probably knows the answer.
It took about six months for my PR to be approved, I’ve seen comments from others who took longer than that. The piece of paper they told you take out is probably your original entry permit when you first arrived here on a visa. If they told you that’s all they need then I would follow those instructions. When I renewed my passport they just moved my original entry permit from my old passport to my new one.
I just did this! Combination of horrible timings…Immigration accepted the application for renewal (payment confirmation) along with a copy of the old one plus my my number card as valid ID. This was for a US passport.
You’re not the only person to deal with this situation. Call immigration and ask them what they say.
Also, how long does it take to renew your passport? People are perhaps waiting 6+ months to get PR, although obviously it varies, but if you can renew your passport in less than four, you’re probably good to go.
I just renewed my visa and my passport was expired and being renewed. I brought the receipt for the renewal, but Immigration (Asahikawa) didn’t care at all. I don’t know if PR process would warrant a different level of consideration, but it didn’t impact my renewal in any way.
