1. Hey all! I’m still studying at an N5 level. I don’t usually understand sentences that get too complicated when I hear them, and I want to get better at immersion. Is it better to:
   – pause, read and understand Japanese subtitles watching something for the first time, or
   – watch it with subtitles at normal speed, don’t pause to look stuff up, see what I comprehend, and rewatch it all again?

2. If the imperative of くる is こい, why is the imperative of ～てくる ～てくれ?

3. Not a question, but I just read 241 pages さよなら流星ガール by 一二三スイ in four days and now my brain feels fried. Agh!

4. I was wondering about this passage:

   I think I get this means “People didn’t appear that obtained wealth and honor”

   But the first part is a little hard, I don’t get what the volitional 集まろうと is doing there

   I think it’s about some number of people who will dive into the depths of the sea of trees, but that’s all I can figure out

5. When and how did you all stop translating from Japanese words to your native language in your heads? Anytime I hear something in Japanese I try to think of the English equivalent. How can I stop this?

6. My Japanese is by all means awful, but lowkey, I feel like occasionally one of the biggest obstacles to translating comics can be figuring out who’s speaking.    The context is a pokemon trainer has been mysteriously transformed into a Lugia. Upon noticing this, he looks himself up on his Rotom Phone pokedex. The Rotom Phone starts saying “Lugia, the Diving pokemon……”, then there’s the text box 「もう正真正銘のルギアだよ！！」. Is this Lugia saying “Holy crap, I’m an honest-to-goodness Lugia!!” (i.e. “what I suspected was true!”), or is it the Rotom Phone saying “Holy crap, it’s an honest-to-goodness Lugia!!” (i.e. “I’m shocked to see such a rare and powerful pokemon!”), and how do you know?
