animal crossing for practicing japanese

looking for another game to play in japanese. would you say that the animals in New Horizons use modern conversational language? does that depend on the personality type of the villager? i’d appreciate some input from someone who has tried the game in japanese.

  1. there actually was an animal crossing anki deck

but it got taken down for copyright violation

  2. Yes. they purposely make the text comprehensible for children so it’s fairly simplistic and good practice.

  3. I’ve put in many hours into New Horizons in Japanese.

It’s easier to comprehend than say a proper novel. Aside from the little speech quirks that each character has, I think it’s a good resource for learning.

As far as speech patterns are concerned when compared to how people chat online, I guess it depends. I don’t think there’s anything said by the characters that I wouldn’t say myself. But if you want to learn from natural conversation, I’d recommend following some communities on Twitter or reading the chat in a YouTube livestream.

At the very least Animal Crossing has a ton of day-to-day vocabulary that could prove useful.

  4. I’m more of a newbie (N4) so the speech quirks throw me more than others, but all the vocab is great.

Also, you have the fun challenge of trying to figure out what the hell Gulliver/ジョニー is trying to say 😅

  5. I had mixed feelings about it. Sometimes the instructions are tough to follow while you are still learning. I actually had an easier time playing Pokémon Scarlet and Tomodachi Collection.

Edit: actually that’s a little unfair cause I’m farm more advanced now while playing Scarlet. What I should say is I can really tell the sentence structure in Pokémon is often easier to read. Animal crossing has a lot more complex sentences in it.
