When we visited Japan in 2019 we saw absolutely massive supermarket bentos for like $4.50. Crazy.
Sometimes I wonder if this is a part of a welfare system in a way? Is there a govt law on having to provide some cheap meals or the cheap prices of public baths?
I mean the second cheapest apartment in Tokyo I’ve seen was $200/mo. In a really old bldg, but clean. You had to use public baths. But at those prices you can live okay on a 800 yen/hr job. I know Japan in general seems to have looser zoning laws and a wider variety of housing types.
Shit I even watched a video on YouTube about the ‘bad side’ of Tokyo and they visited an apartment supposedly run by the Yakuza and it was 10x cleaner than any place in the US you’d get for the same price.
