Advice for upcoming trip

My partner and I have planned our second trip to Japan for this upcoming July. We haven’t been since 2019 and have 28 days total on this trip.

I’ve already roughly mapped out the first two weeks of the trip, revisiting a few places from our last trip to hit some things we missed last time, mostly around the standard first time places (Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka). That being said, we aren’t sure what areas we would like to designate to the second half of our trip.

Our first trip involved us visiting the following areas:
– Tokyo
– Osaka
– Kyoto
– Matsumoto
– Magome & Tsumago (we hiked a section of the Nakasendo trail)
– Kanazawa
– Hiroshima and Miyajima island
– Himeji
– Nara

For our second trip we are considering heading further south to explore the Kyushuu area, North to explore Hokkaido area, or taking a trip to Okinawa for part of the second half.

Any advice would be appreciated!

As a side note, we are fully aware of what the weather will be like in July, as it’s basically the same timeframe as our last trip. Our jobs really only allow us to go around this time of year.

  1. Kyushuu is cool. I really liked Unzen, Takachiho Gorge, and Mt. Aso. Hakata is cool too. Didn’t care for Beppu or Nagasaki. Shikoku is also a cool place. More specifically Kagawa prefecture. Lots of udon stuff there. Shodoshima is probably my favorite in that area. However, you might need a car there. I don’t know much about it’s public transportation. Shodoshima is famous for olives and soy sauce production.
