I searched this group and Google but wanted to see if anyone had insight. I’m on an instructor visa good for 3 more years. I finished my job at an international school recently, and I am moving to another country in July for a different job.
However, it’s much more economical for me to stay in Japan for the spring/early summer than go home to Canada (sadly), so I was looking for some part-time work. I am on the substitute teacher list for an international school in Tokyo and I already have some days locked in. Two questions:
1. Is this fine to do on my instructor visa since it’s a designated educational institution?
2. Will this be enough to say I have “another job” so that I’m not in trouble for not having one for 90 days? (Last job ended 31 March, I’m moving in July but probably around the 10th. Don’t want any trouble when I try to leave the country in July)
Thank you!

I think you should ask Immigration, as only they (and even then, sometimes it depends on the officer you talk to) can give you a safe answer. I’m not sure if you can get in trouble for working only part time while your current instructor visa is valid, but when it comes to renewing it, if you don’t make enough money you can get denied. Though I guess if you’re going home before that you might not be worried about that aspect.
As for visa type, instructor visas are typically for public schools, so you should double check that you’re alright with your instructor status; other kinds of English teaching jobs, like Eikaiwa for example, fall under the specialist in humanities visa category instead. Again, that’s a question for Immigration though
Did you notify immigration you left previous employer? If you left March 31st you’re still within the required 14 day time line.
Also have you enrolled in national pension and national health insurance?
You will also need to inform immigration again within 14 days when you start working with this school as a substitute teacher.
But assuming you’re all by the book (notifying immigration and paying your pension health Insurance and taxes etc) you should be all good to do this work on your instructor visa. And I don’t think the 3 months unemployed thing would matter either because you have notified them you’re working for a new school.
Edit: the link instructor visa holders need for notifying immigration is here: https://www.moj.go.jp/isa/applications/procedures/nyuukokukanri10_00014.html
