The the context I most often hear the word in. 資料 on the other hand, I often hear in the context of 資料館, for example the Japanese name for the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum is the 広島平和記念**資料**館. This museum displays a lot of historical artifacts from the bombing, including personal possessions of victims, remnants of buildings, flyers from the era, etc.
