Can I adopt my younger siblings and bring them over on a dependents visa?

I’m looking to move to Japan and eventually aim for permanent residence. However, if I leave the US my youngest sibling will have no one. They don’t have a degree nor the ability to get one, so I wondered about this option.

  1. Generally speaking, yes, adopted children can be dependents. Subject to your income in Japan and a lot of other factors.

If you’re going to be an English teacher: No, you probably won’t be able to bring them even if you adopt them, simply because you won’t be making enough.

    ***BUT…***

By “they don’t have a degree” I’m going to assume that they are *not* minors anymore.

The dependent visa is for minor children. The only way you’d get a dependent visa for adult children is if they are ***fully dependent*** on you to survive. That’s not “They won’t have anyone”, it’s “They are physically or intellectually disabled and need full-time care”

  2. Why don’t they have the ability to get a degree? There are many programs in the US aimed at helping those who can’t afford college. They can start at community college and transfer.
