Itinerary help – 13 days Osaka, Kanazawa and Tokyo

Very rough itinerary just trying to gather some ideas and answer some questions.
Family of three going to Japan November, two adults and an 8 year old.

We will be flying JAL into Haneda and transferring to Osaka. Does anyone know if you have to clear customs with everyone else or is there a quick way through for transfer flights? Would we also have to pick up our luggage or will it just transfer to our next flight? Our layover is 2hrs and even though the ticket was purchased like that I am a little worried we may have to rush.

We have an idea of what we want to do but don’t like setting it into days and just go with the flow. I’m just wanting to know if what we have planned is too rushed or too slow. Don’t have much planned for Tokyo yet, planning to just wonder.

Are there any must sees we may be missing?
Any good museums that a great for kids?
We love gardens and just wondering the streets discovering things as we go.

Arrive 8:30pm Osaka – 4 nights 3-3.5 days
Stay Namba area
– Day or 1/2 day Nara mainly for Nara park, any other must sees
– Osaka Aquarium
– Dotonbori
– Shinsaibashi shopping street
– teamLab Botanical Garden. Is this good? We will be going to teamLabs in Tokyo
– Osaka castle
– Wagyu teppanyaki dinner. We were looking at New Matsusaka. Has anyone been? Or any other suggestions. Also will we all need to order the same dinner sets. We would prefer to order a smaller dinner set for our 8 year old.

Day 5 leave for Kanazawa. 2 nights 1.5-2 days
Stay around the castle area
– Kanazawa castle
– Kenrokuen gardens
– Higashi Chaya District
– Onmichi markets
– Contemporary art museum
– Samurai district
– Half day is Kaga Onsen, not to visit an onsen just to visit the towns. Don’t know if this is worth it.
Anything else we may be missing? Is this too busy for two days.

Day 7 Tokyo. 6 nights 6 days
Leave Kanazawa 3pm arrive Tokyo dinner time.
Staying in the outskirts of Tokyo
– Disneyland or sea. Our kid will be picking which one to go to.
– Maybe Studio Ghibli museum or just find a store to visit.
– teamLabs borderless if open or planets
– Yoyogi park or Ueno park or both
– Shibuya sky or Skytree, which is better?
– Ramen street in Tokyo station
– Shopping

Day 13 Fly out 6:30pm from Haneda

I am also looking to buy knives while we are over there. Where would be best to shop for them?

We are wanting to send our luggage from Osaka to Tokyo before leaving for Kanazawa. Do all hotels receive luggage deliveries or should I check first? If the hotel doesn’t receive the luggage can you get it transferred to a service centre? Bit worried about losing our luggage.

  1. I’ve never heard anyone say Skytree is worth the cost or time and expect Shibuya Sky to be the same. I was near Shibuya Sky earlier this week, and the lines were massive. They were announcing at 1pm that reservations were at capacity for the entire day. Not sure I would dedicate hours of waiting in line when there are hundreds of other buildings that can give you a decent (though admittedly lower) view of the city.

Not sure I’d go all the way from Shibuya to Tokyo Station just for Ramen. You’ll have many choices in Shibuya already.

  2. I was at the teamlabs botanical garden in osaka a few days ago and I think it is worth a visit. We needed about 30-45 mins for the whole thing.

  3. For luggage delivery, most decent hotels provide this service (sending and storage). You can ask the Osaka hotel to call the Tokyo hotel to confirm they can store the luggage while waiting for your arrival. Depending on the size of your luggage, 1piece is approx 2k yen, for your reference.
