How to go to the ward office/other offices as a full time employee?

I was wondering if any full time employees encounter this problem. I think most if not all government offices (ward, tax, immigration etc.) operate between mon-fri 9-5, so how do people with the same job schedules visit these places? Do you take a day off just to do that?

  1. In my previous job, I had to take a half day off since my work place was a factory 30 minutes by car from civilization.

Many office workers have flextime so you could show up early, like 6 am then get off at 3 and still barely make it to wherever you needed to be.

  2. I tell someone I’m taking a 外出 or I go during my lunch “hour”.

  3. It’s half-a-day’s hurdle alright if you wanna get everything done at once in 新宿区役所

    Wish this was doable online…

  4. > Do you take a day off just to do that?

You’d usually take a paid half-day leave for it.

  5. Most ward offices have one or two days per month when they’re open on saturdays or sundays. Check your city’s website for it. When I moved to Yokohama I went on a Saturday, and when I moved to Kita-ku I went on a Sunday.

  6. Depending on the company you don’t necessarily have to take a whole day off. You can take the morning/afternoon off, or you can just say that you’d like to take however much time to go to the office depending on your daily schedule. For example, you can say you’re going to go to the hospital/ward office/etc. from 2-4 PM, and this would count as 離席.

  7. Yes, you’d use your vacation time to take a personal day to do errands. My parents do the same thing in my home country, as the place I’m from also runs on those same hours.

  8. Some ward office open Saturday. Some close late on Friday. Check your ward office if they have those schedule.

  9. Usually 代休 or go on a day they’re open late/Weekend

  10. My previous ward was open until 7pm every Friday. Idk about my new ward though. You can try and check your ward’s website to see their business hours

  11. This is just part of adult life. Sometimes you have to use pto do deal with important things.

  12. In some companies you sent an email saying you need the morning or X hours off to go to the town office. Then you may work later that day to compensate etc.

  13. Depending on the type of paperwork you need I guess.

For immigration, unless you’re renewing your visa, you can do almost everything by post mail.

    Same with ward office.

Idk about other places but 23-ku does have 1 or 2 day a month where the ward office is open on the weekend.

I had to renew my (foreign) passport recently. My workplace allow flexible working time so I could come late in the morning or take long lunch break and stay late.

  14. I take a half day off, and go right when they open. Some things are available on Saturday or Sunday, depending on the 区役所。check their website.

The immigration office i take a full day off for.

  15. “Hi, I have some important business at immigration/the ward office. I’ll go there on (date and time) when it won’t impact my work”

Never heard any complaints about that.

  16. Same as in any other country. Be lucky enough to have a boss that allows you, do it during lunch (ideally home office lunch), do it early morning and come in later or on a day off.

  17. Take advantage of japans ridiculous 1 hour mandatory break and sneak it in? Haha
