What is your favorite Buddhist temple complex in Japan?

Today’s question is: What is your favorite Buddhist temple complex in Japan?

The Three Mountains of Dewa in the northern mountains of Yamagata Prefecture, Kiyomizu-dera complex in Kyoto’s Higashiyama neighbourhood, Todai-ji featuring the Great Buddha all are inherently different in styles, location.

Some people like complexes that require steep hike up the hills and spending multiple days in the area. Others enjoy the many subtemples and classical Kyoto layouts.

So tell us, what is your favorite **Buddhist temple complex** in Japan.

  1. Nanzen-ji, because the subtemples are so different from each other with nooks and gardens, aqueduct and it’s not overrun by people like some of the other temples.

  2. Danjo Garan in Koya San was fantastic for us! Super atmospheric and almost nobody there.
