JP bank card – ATM rejects card, must update residence card details

Basically title. Has anyone had this message pop up and if so after completing the update how long was it until they could use their card again. Side question: is it just JP bank doing this or have all banks frozen cards until updating?

Details: I did the proceedure online and it ended with “we have received your declaration”, but no email, text etc confirmation. Usually with these kind of things if you try and re-do it it will say something like “this account has already submitted” or “this code has already been used” etc, so I thought I’d try the process again to see if it would stop me as a de facto confirmation that it’s processing.

It did let me so I was unsure if the process was underway or not. With a one or two week processing time in which I couldn’t use my card to withdraw from ATMs I wanted to be sure it was underway so I called a support number. They said it says that time frame but most unlock immediately so I go to try it.

It still has the message about updating, but lets me check my balance, which I was unable to do before, so I guessed it was good to go. I try to withdraw a heft sum for rent but it says this card cannot be used for this transaction. I try again with 10k and it works. I try again with 60k and it fails. I try it again with 20k and it works. I try 30k, 20k, and 10k and they all start failing. Seems I’m capped at 30k? Is this related to this residence card update or not?

I called that support line again and they have no idea, say I have to to go a branch about that. Regarding the processing of my update the advice was the message will disappear in a few days and the only way to confirm is to keep trying to use my card every day.

Just an overall frustrating experience and wondering if anyone has any information about it.

  1. Yeah, this is normal for JP bank. It’s a pain in the ass if you constantly get 1 year renewals. My solution was to open up a bank account with another bank.

  2. >I called that support line again and they have no idea, say I have to to go a branch about that.

Then you have your answer. Are you looking for someone to give you a different answer?

  3. all banks have to do this because of the anti-money laundering laws. how they do it is up to them. Sony was really accommodating and easy to deal with.

  4. Didn’t you receive a letter from the bank with some forms? I get them from all the banks around the time my visa was about to expire and submit copies of my zairyu card or go in-person.

  5. Had a JP bank account until a year or so ago. Had the same error only it was limiting me to 50,000 per withdrawal rather than freezing the account completely. Filled in the paperwork online twice, three times in a branch having explained each time that the error didn’t go away. Staff very apologetic, promises that the error was solved were proffered each time etc.

Error still wasn’t solved after the third time. Changed banks, never had the issue again.

    Change banks!

  6. Personally last year I did it online and I remember it being confirmed pretty quickly, and I did it before it was locked (but after I started getting the warning on the receipt) so I never had it get locked to begin with,

This year I didn’t get a warning on the receipt until like 2-3 days before they locked it, and I was trying to use an atm right outside of a post office when it became locked, so I just went inside and told them and we filled out the paperwork by hand which was a much bigger hassle than doing it online, but my card was immediately unlocked and I was able to go out to the atm and withdraw money immediately, however it’s been literally weeks and I STILL get the message on my ATM receipt for some reason which is kind of unnerving.

So long story short, unlocking it in person is probably the quicker way to get immediate access to your account again, although the paperwork is more mendokusai that way

  7. I updated my card info online and in person. That was over two years ago and the message still pops up. I’ve been ignoring it for years and they’ve never taken any kind of action against my account, so I guess it’s just a shitty, bugged system. Also, the card they have on file must have expired on 2021 because I haven’t given them my new info two years.

  8. You should still be able to withdraw from post office ATM’s in small amounts. 1 or 2 man
