I was just bored and scrolling through here and I am absolute baffled at how many reports there are EVERY DAY of random middle aged dudes approaching and trying to talk to children, and cases of people flashing the lower half of their body at people. Am I just overblowing this in my head or is this really this much of a problem here? I’ve been living here a year and haven’t witnessed anything like this once.

Tokyo has nearly 14 million people, so i feel 5 cases a day isn’t high at all.
Lets assume that Tokyo has had 3 times that many events a day…. sooo… (98 days x15) is about 1500 events total.

There are many pedophiles in this country. I too have been exposed to exposure and molestation since I was about 5 years old. I have never reported it because I thought my parents would be concerned. In fact, I believe there are considerably more victims than this number of reports. Boys and girls are targeted equally. If you have children, please make sure they have a security buzzer.
My understanding (please correct if wrong) is that if someone is declared mentally non-responsible for crime, there’s almost nothing the police can do and there’s a very, very small number of people who just go do things like this every day, knowing they can’t be put in jail.
These look like the crime reports I was getting on LINE for a while although they seem to have stopped. Every other day in my locale there was something. There’s way more than 5 per day of this kind of thing I’d imagine, but it’s still so low when you consider how big Tokyo is.
There is sense that it is not so much about morality, but more about whether you get caught or not. This combined with a culture of romanticization of pedophilia and perversity in general.
