For years, I’ve cooked Shirakiku’s koshihikari rice (grown in California), but the Japanese market near me in Nashville sells this Japan-grown brand, and I gave it a try…and holy moly, it’s superior in every way. Heftier grain, nuttier flavor, and superior texture. It’s a little pricier (you get 11 pounds for the same price of a 15-pound Shirakiku bag), but I think it’s well worth the cost.
P.S. I use a Zojirushi NP-HCC10 for my rice.
It costs as much as eating meat!

Best rice I ever had was the rice I had after coming back to Japan after going back to the UK to see my family.
I had rice and miso soup and it was the best.
Koshihikari is grown all over Japan (and even in California) but the Niigata variety is most famous. also worth trying: Akitakomachi (guess from where) and Yumepirika (from Hokkaido).
The best Japanese rice ever is yumepirika, koshihikari is good but it’s just got a little more hype attached to it than anything else….
