Late Ski Resort Trip Advice in May 2023 (Kagura Snow Resort)

Hi everyone! I’ve been wanting to go skiing but due to circumstances, I can only visit Japan by Mid May (next month). Unfortunately, I know most ski resorts are closed by then. The latest one I’ve found is Kagura Snow Resort which is forecasted to close by May 21 according to their website (https://www.princehotels.com/en/ski/kagura/index.html#tabArea).

Knowing this, I’m planning on going by May 15th-18th. My question is should I stay by the Echigo-Yuzawa station? And from accomodations there, are there buses that go to the Mitsumata area (the base station where the ropeway to Kagura is).

If anyone has been to Kagura and stayed in the area, I’d love to know how you planned it through and how is the resort around that time.

  1. I’ve never been to that particular resort so can’t comment there.

I just got back from skiing in Nozawa early-mid march and the snow was unfortunately not that great. Its to be expected offpeak season but still sucks.

Hoping you’ll have a better experience with the snow, best of luck!

  2. This year has been really warm so I honestly wouldn’t recommend skiing that late.

If anything there will be just a couple of “lanes” on the slope with snow if even that much.
If all of it melts the resort will close earlier.
