5G wireless home internet vs ADSL.

I need fast internet, but my landlord won’t let me install Hikari internet and there’s only ADSL so I would like to ask, has anyone here tried 5G wireless home internet? The advertisements promise good speed, but I want to ask around to make sure it’s a good option before I try it.

  1. Depends on how far you’re from the base station and where in your apartment the device is and how many people are in your area/cell, but generally any kind of LTE/5G internet will be worse than a proper hard line.

Did you explain your landlord that installation of fiber can be done through aircon duct etc so no drilling and so on is needed? And it would actually increase the value of the apartment once you move out since network construction doesn’t need to happen again.

  2. According to my personal experience and tons of people here,

[It is](https://www.reddit.com/r/japanlife/comments/12bcasb/did_i_get_scammed_by_docomo_ntt_slow_nonexistent/) [pretty bad.](https://www.reddit.com/r/japanlife/comments/slvj0d/is_it_just_me_or_is_softbank_air_internet_service/) Even worse if you play online games. Pings are horrible even for connections within Japan (<10ms proper fiber line, 50-60ms 4G/5G)

If you absolutely have to, then make sure you test their speeds daily after you got the device, if it’s not up to your liking or expectation cancel the contract within 8 days. All carriers (docomo, softbank, au) has a 8-day no penalty cancellation policy.

  3. In general, wireless will always have an overall worse experience than a wired solution.

I think most likely your “ADSL” is just the distribution system in your building but fiber optic internet runs up to it. That won’t be as bad as actual DSL but still not as good as if you had your own fiber line.
