Free daycare tip

Does your wife need a break from the kids, but you do too after a long week at work?

Pack the kids a small bentou. Go to all the nice looking car dealers in Japan, like Toyota. Express your interest in a new car. You’ll be greeted and given a menu for coffee / tea / etc. By this time, the kids already found the play area. No need to talk much, especially if you use you’re gaijin card a bit. Just let them talk all they want about car X, car Y, car Z, etc.

Enjoy the coffee for a nice 2-3 hours. Ask for refills of course. If you have small children, ask them if a nee-san can look after them.

Thank them for their time, and say you’ll come back again for some other info. When it’s questionnaire time, give a fake name and fake address (have this pre-prepared). And be sure to fill it out at the last second so they don’t look it up while you’re there. Or just refuse to do it, lol.

Go eat lunch.

For the afternoon, repeat at some other dealer.

By 4-5 pm, it’s time to head home to a happy wife, and thus, a happy life. The kids had a great time, and so did you looking at cars all day (if you like cars anyway). Some places even have some really good lattes. And the best part? It’s all FREE.

  1. There is a car dealer near my place where one morning one ojisan walked in with a handful of newspaper, sat and stayed there all day drinking self-served tea. By evening they had enough and called the cops and he had to be escorted out.

I mean, you can do that too but what’s the point.

  2. It’s clear that the OP has little money and education to act ethically, while respecting other people’s profession. Sad.
You should maybe be taken advantage of the same way. Let’s see – waiting for your follow up post when you get abused.

  3. Or you could just like, and this is a wild idea, spend the day with your kid outside the house?

  4. Usually, the play areas are not very big or exciting, at least for my kids they would have gotten bored after 5 minutes and spent the rest of the time running around and trying to play in the display cars. Wouldn’t it be easier to just take them to a jidokan?

  5. Genius! It’s like my dad taking me to the community pool on the weekends and just sitting nearby with his newspaper (although I didn’t like his insistence that I stay in the little kiddies pool at the age of 10 – now *that* was lazy parenting, but at least I was safe). And I won’t judge you for refusing to hand out your personal info to all and sundry. I’ve just had to deal with helping my friends get off a mailing list that had been dogging them since 2011. They nearly cried with relief.

  6. How is this a daycare? Can you leave your kids at the dealership for 6 hours while you go elsewhere?

  7. is the wife actually happy? I bet you’re one of those people who say ‘happy wife happy life’.

Go to the zoo, aquarium, have a picnic at the park, go to the library, shopping mall even has indoor play areas, if you do that in the morning they’ll hit the sack after lunch for a few hours. That’s the break you earned. Your method is an absolute waste of a weekend of your kids’ precious family time.
