A friend of mine in Japan needs to sign and get notarized a US legal document.
What’s the best way to go about doing this?
Googling shows that there are “virtual” notaries (eg usvirtualnotary.com/service/international-notarization). That would be ideal, but I’m a little wary.

You can get notary services at the US embassy if you are in the kantou area
I’d presume that SOFA people would have access to notaries through their base. Otherwise the US embassy is the easiest route. Expensive though at $50 per stamp.

Virtual notaries are legit. You can also visit the embassy.
Be aware, depending on the document you may need a notary from a specific US state. The embassy covers this, but virtual notaries may not.
