Golden Week: Places with less crowds?

It might be too late but I’m still in the planning stage for Golden Week and I’ve heard of stories where places are packed.

Are there places that aren’t packed or are generally less popular but still worth going to?

  1. Gunma has some nice places to visit! But it depends on what you like to do I guess. The main onsen spots will probably be busy, and it can be a bit difficult getting around without a car

I hear Kyushu isn’t terribly crowded during GW though

  2. Tottori is pretty quiet.
At least when i went. Just for a day tho and it was 2021 so I might be wrong in 2023

  3. After 32 years in Japan the best advice I can give you is……. Stay Home! You can thank me later.

  4. I think most people are trying to leave the big city to visit their family outside their prefecture. It is probably better go in the opposite direction and go to into the big cities during this time. It is hard to get train/plane tickets and hotel during GW unless you want to pay more.

  5. Tokyo gets quiet, as everyone wants to travel elsewhere. So if you live in Tokyo it’s kind of a good time to check out some local sights.

If you want to travel, avoid doing so on the first and final days of Golden Week. Unless you love lines/congestion/traffic/gormless hordes.
