My mom sent me a postal money order from the US… Does anyone know how I can deposit it?

Yuucho says they can’t do it, and I can’t install my American bank’s app on my Japanese phone. I don’t want to tell my mom that she failed when she was trying to be nice!

  1. If you’re technically inclined, you could install an android emulator on your PC and then install your US bank app there.

A quick Google says getting the camera app to work (I assume you need to send a photo of the money order, front and back) is do-able but may take some finagling.

But hopefully someone else here has a more convenient method.

  2. Can you not install the app because of the region?

You might be able to just make a second App Store account with the region set to America (I know you can for Apple) and then download the bank app from the App Store. It feels like that kind of defeats the purpose, since it seems like it’s just sending the money back to an American account.

As for depositing/cashing it, your best bet would be an American bank with branches in Japan, but even that might be a long shot.

People have asked about depositing American checks before here, so it would be a good idea to use the search bar and check what responses they got to their posts.

If your mother wants to give you money via your American bank account in the future, is it possible for her to deposit it in person or transfer it online to your American account?

  3. The 2nd Gmail account from Japan as suggested above works I know from experience, or look into “wise ” transfer wich ever currency to your wise account exchange to Japanese yen (rates are good same as official rate)then send to your Japanese bank account

  4. If you don’t have an American bank app to deposit checks, you can do it the old fashion way and mail it in. Back in the day before there was Wise or mobile deposit, I would buy US Money order at Japan Post and I would mail my money order to Chase bank to deposit into my account. I had to mail it to a specific branch in Texas, but it got the job done.

  5. Not sure about postal money orders, but I highly suggest Wise. It can be a little tricky setting up at first, or at least when I had my mom do it on her end, because at the time it dealt with Japanese terms that I needed to copy and paste to her (might have changed since then) but it’s the only way I have my parents send me money now when they’re feeling generous lol.
