  1. Suggestions for the best places to get custom-made/ designed business cards?

My current one is very, very bland.

  2. Will I be still eligible for 420,000 child benefits if I change the job? We are expecting our first on September. I am planning to change the job on May. It will Seishain too in new company.
Should I take any other precautions? I dont want to mess this up..

  3. I have worked 4 years as an ALT and have been applying for jobs. I want to I have a better履歴書 and 職務経歴書. For 履歴書 which standard do you guys use the 厚生労働省, JIS, or something else? Or should I use a special one for foreigners that includes my nationality and visa status (one year instructor)? Is it necessary to include those things? If anyone has a link to a good format, I would forever be in your debt.

  4. Anyone recently get a gaming PC? I’m looking around for something prebuilt (tower) and wondering if anyone has any shop recommendations online or in Tokyo. Thanks 👍.

  5. Kind of a bad thing on my part, but I need to update my bicycle registration to a new address in the same building (different unit). The thing is that I moved in to the new place over a year ago and never thought about the registration until recently. it’s literally the same address but a different unit number. I’m trying to get approval to move again because that building and management are bad news, so I might have to do this twice for the bike.

Can it be updated at any bike shop, or do I have to go to a koban? My Japanese isn’t that great, so I’m wondering if they’ll start questioning me about why I didn’t do it right after I moved the first time, dragging out a simple task. I haven’t had any interactions with the local police since moving here over a year ago.

  6. Hi! I’m looking for cool fantasy miniatures to buy in Japan. Can be major brands but open to other things. So far the things I’ve found are ww2 themed

I’m not interested in a 3d printer – I just don’t have the room. I’m happy to buy things made on it but have had terrible luck with a lot of the products

  7. i don’t drink alcohol, but i am really curious

do the sake really taste different at each prefecture?

  8. Can anyone suggest a good pocket wifi rental? I know there are a lot but I need suggestions from people that actually used them.

Will be used for 7 days by 4 people and is still usable in crowded areas in like Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka during Golden Week.

  9. What is a good bar with nice cocktails and has an international atmosphere in Tokyo? Not the hub!!! Any recommendations?

  10. What is a good bar or restaurant in Kagoshima with a cool atmosphere? I am traveling there this June and don’t know where to go

  11. anyone ever try the devilman shochu? i like the bottle design, but not much of a shochu drinker unless it’s smooth/sweet. can’t handle the standard kind that tastes like licking a 9v battery lol

  12. Any recommendations to buy some anime posters (cheap) in osaka? My room is kinda empty
    Edit: typo

  13. Any recommendations for somewhere I can go to get a CT scan and ECG? Still having fine crackles problem when breathing at night (seems to point to some sort of heart or lung issue) but the 内科 clinic (even says respiratory specialist..) I’ve been going to seems to be at a dead end (they’ve done X-ray, breathing tests, bloody tests, nothing has come up weird) and I probably need to go elsewhere, since I know something is going wrong with my body.

I was thinking of going to the University of Tokyo Hospital since it appears to have a sizeable team of respiratory specialists (and they seem to have all of the equipment I mentioned and more).

I probably need to stay a few hours (or overnight) for proper monitoring. They cannot pick up the sound with a stethoscope, only way I’ve been able to show them is by recording the sound at night (next to my nose/mouth) on my phone.

Getting tired of the whole “*don’t know what it is yet but for now here take this medicine that may or may not doing something*” shtick. None of the medicine has worked so far.

Any pointers in the right direction would be greatly appreciated.

  14. I’ve been ^(gifted) the opportunity to translate handbooks and other items from Japanese to English at my institution. Most of it is in PDF form. The translation isn’t a problem, but the software logistics might be an issue.

For those that do written translation work, is there a particular software that’s a go-to? I figured using Acrobat/Word, but wanted to see if there are other applications out there.

  15. I have money on my Mercari app and I know I can use Merupay for things.

Anyone know if it’s possible to charge my IC Suica card that’s in my apple wallet/iPhone using that Merupay money? I currently have Line pay hooked to charge the Suica, is it possible to charge my Line Wallet with Merupay?

Also can I use that Merupay to pay bills and for things like Internet purchases paid through combini barcode payments? I remember 7/11 wouldn’t accept card payments for bills, cash only so I’m wondering if it’s similar.

  16. Am I just being stupid here? I took a look at monthly commuter passes between my station and my office (both on the Ginza line) and even if I was going in 5 days a week / round trip it’s still cheaper to pay per ride than with the pass.

    Am I doing something wrong?

  17. I asked in the general discussion thread about drones yesterday but I will ask here also.

I know they are legal in some areas but was registration and all that easy or were the restrictions and laws so constrictive you wish you just didn’t bother in the first place?

  18. This is really dumb, but I think I need to relearn how to ride a bike. Where would be good to practice? Parks? I don’t even know where bicycles are allowed…

I haven’t ridden a bike in 10 or 15 years. I tried to ride a rental bike in London last year but I was too scared to go properly. (Also that bike seemed so heavy? Is that a normal? Idk)

I want to visit Naoshima and bike around to see everything but it’s looking a bit impossible at this point 🙁 how can I forget how to ride a bike?? And be too scared when everyone else can do it??? I feel so dumb haha

  19. Hi all, I’m usually the one giving out doctor recommendations and all, but this time I’m asking for one.

Looking for an orthopedics clinic or hospital in Tokyo or Chiba that can do an MRI and give me the results the same day as the initial consultation.

I currently have to travel by taxi, so I’d like to avoid having to travel back and forth just for a diagnosis. Neck and shoulder pain and tightness. Japanese only is OK.

  20. Has anyone gone abroad and returned to Japan recently?
I’m in the midst of booking tickets four my annual visit and noticed on the price breakdown there’s a 1000yen charge for tourist tax upon return. I know in the grand scheme of things it might seem like a small amount… But it’s also about the cost of a bowl of ramen. Any luck on getting that fee waived since I actually pay taxes here?

  21. Went to immigration last week as many of us do every year. When I first handed in my application, the person returned my shuunyuu inshi to me. I thought: huh, that’s weird, but maybe I give it to them later on. I ended up at home with my application complete and realized they never took the stamp. Do we not need the stamp anymore? Is the stamp for when I go to pick up my new card? I can’t remember at what point they used to take the stamp and now i’m wondering if it’ll effect anything or not.

  22. How does everyone here dispose of old broken electronics?
I have stuff from an old faulty PS2 to broken Mac plugs to old headphones sitting in the good oshiire for yonks.
I can imagine the bigger items need to go back to their respective companies… do I just go into a store and go “Allo mate”?

  23. okay so idk if I should make a separate post for this but I live in a sharehouse and 2 weeks ago I got a redelivery notice in my mailbox. I was expecting a package at that time so I scheduled a redelivery without reading the name (in japanese) on the redelivery notice (yeah I know I was careless here, but it was in MY mailbox and I was expecting package at the time I’m also new here and can’t read japanese well, so it did not catch my eye).

anyhow, when the yamato guy arrived I just showed the redelivery notice to him and he just nodded and handed over the package and went his way. No words exchanged.

First thing I noticed the package did not have any receiver’s name or address. just the sender’s written in japanese (which I later found was some online japanese store for clothes and accessories) As I was expecting a parcel myself, I opened the package to find a shirt and hair clip that I definitely did not order. I asked all my housemates but they did not either ( took a whole week to ask all of them) Showed them the redelivery notice and it says “Tanaka” on it japanese.

What should I do here? Should I contact yamato? I have already opened the package and its been around 2 weeks. My housemate say i should just keep it at this point but like I’m not sure….

  24. Anyone here has a home gym (eg: machine with pulleys and weights)? Was it worth it?

I’m thinking of buying one so I don’t have to go to the gym, but I’m afraid it won’t be enough and I’ll end up with a bug expensive pile of weights occupying space in my house.

  25. Can anyone recommend a good pocket wifi? I have family visiting, they’ll only need it for 2 weeks.

  26. pretty much decided I’m going to get Lasik, probably the amaris version of the procedure.

does anyone know whether you need to bring a friend to translate for shinagawa eye clinic or if they will provide one if you inform them ahead of time? I’ve read conflicting info about this.

also if someone wants to share their promo code … 🙂

  27. Where can you buy/drink hard Seltzers in Tokyo?
My list so far for anyone else interested

    Amazon – Smirnoff or Niu
    Hanamasa – Niu
Family mart – sometimes has Smirnofff
Antenna America – good selection but pricy

  28. Why does the bus for an international school in the middle of Minato Ward, park out in the centre of Shinagawa Ward? Just cheaper parking?
