There are some cool volcanos/hikes and onsen north of the city. Kirishima something national park
If you have a few days in the area, it could be worth taking a day or two to visit Yakushima. It’s a short ferry ride away (if you take the hydrofoil ferry), and really amazing to hike around.
If you want to try an izakaya, I recommend yokaban in tenmonkan area, she loves tourists and loves to speak English, they have plenty of Shochu to choose from but also other drinks as well, if you want some fun activities you could try going down further south to Ibusuki and try the volcanic onsen where they bury you in warm volcanic sand, it’s supposed to be good for the skin
Highly recommend Sengan-en if you are interested in Japan’s indrustial revolution and how Japan had to become a modern country in the 19th century because of foreign forces.
For only 1000en I spent 5 hours there and hiked to the top of the mountain where the old pavilions resided.
Sengan-en is where Shimazu-family resided for a long time.
Ibusuki is a cool onsen town! Nice for a day trip, and the collection of Eevee Pokemon manholes are there.
Look at trees, not much else to do.
I’m fond of the animatronic robots at the Meiji restoration museum
I know there’s a nice Japanese garden by the ocean. I also remember stopping by an abandoned hotel that would make a great setting for a Saw movie.
I enjoyed going to the Shiroyama Park Observation Deck. I went super early for sunrise and got a beautiful view of Sakurajima
I also went down to the southern most point which was also very nice with the sunset. Cape Sata park observation deck has a nice walk leading up to it.
