Private tutors in Tokyo

Hi all,

Does anyone have a recommendation for a private tutor in person in Tokyo?

I just moved here a few weeks ago for work and I am really wanting to learn more. I’d prefer to avoid a classroom setting and would like to do 1 on 1 tutoring.

  1. Reach out to your local international center or community center. One of the groups offering Japanese classes might also offer private tutoring arrangements.

If your ok with online, there’s also stuff like italki.

  2. I would recommend finding a free group lesson at your local community centre. They will usually rotate teachers so you can find one you like and then approach them for tutoring on the side.

  3. What is your current level?

Do you need someone to specifically guide you in your language studies and answer questions (about vocab, grammar, sentence structure, etc.)?

Or do you just need practice speaking with native speakers?

If the latter, I suggest you just become a regular at one of your local izakaya and just speak to random drunk oyaji until you become a random drunk oyaji yourself. Hey, it worked for me.

If the former…how much are paying? 😉

  4. From experience I’d say that J people typically suck at teaching their own language. There’s a lot of indirect communication going on and not enough solid stuff. My advice is to pick a non-native speaking of J, preferably from your own country. They typically give more practical directions and tips.
