I am just starting to learn Japanese, so I’m not sure on the many rules. Why is the second kanji in 王子 for Prince pronounced like じ instead of し? In 女子 for Girl the second kanji is pronounced like し. Is this a basic rule or an exceptional circumstance?

This will happen a lot.
It’s just the way it is. Because when you start learning kanji, you’ll just accept it for what it is. Since some things you think wouldn’t make sense, would make sense

Kanjis don’t have pronunciations. Words do. The pronunciation that people claim kanji have are general rules that were applied after the fact
