Any value in audio->vocab Anki cards?

Somebody recently told me about using “audio cards” in Anki (i.e. nothing but the audio on the front; kanji + meaning on the back) and I am curious if anybody else here found value in using this kind of cards. At first glance it sounds like a bad idea to me, due to all the homophones (I have > 10K cards and there are *so many*). But I guess one could put simple hints on the front to help with disambiguation or use audio of full sentences instead of individual words.

Personally I only have vocabulary cards (nothing but the target word on the front and everything else on the back). My strategy for listening comprehension has always been to just listen more, to things I can mostly comprehend. But now I am curious if anybody else here has found value in doing audio Anki cards (for a large number of cards/beyond the beginner level).

  1. Might be good if you how full sentences, for individual words it’s probably hard to do because of homophones. But I’d still stick with just watching kids shows or something in japanese, it’s more fun

  2. No, just watch/listen to things and don’t worry too much about understanding 100%

  3. I clip audio of full sentences/phrases, then use that plus a cloze sentence on the front, with the goal being to recall and write the missing target word. I find it useful for listening comprehension as well as kanji recollection.

  4. I was using a deck that was half audio half normal that had 2 cards for each piece of vocab and I wouldn’t recommend it.

The cards build up so fast for half the vocab, a waste of time IMO, unless you are putting in crazy amounts of time into it, At which point you are probably better off just spending that time listening to something with immersion.

  5. I have been using them for the last 250 days, I find them fantastic since reading is almost always easier because of Kanji.

I generally deal with homophones by adding a hint, This could either be a sentence, a kanji from the word, or just listing the other homophones

    for example

    リンゴの**かわ 「皮」**

    希しょう **「希少」**

    望む **「臨む」**
