Looking for advice on flights and domestic connecting transportation from Tokyo to Osaka/Kansai Airport (Okazaki)

I should have my long term visa by the end of next week so I’m trying to plan my travel. FYI for anyone in the midwest US, I was able to walk into the Chicago consulate and submit my application without an appointment. There was only 1 other person there and I didn’t have to wait at all. They said it would take 1 week to process. If you go in person expect parking to be difficult to find.

Consulate put down ANA as airline and Tokyo as point of entry. Do I need to follow those or is that just a formality to fill in the blanks on the visa application since I didn’t have anything booked yet? Like if I used United which is partnered with ANA, or alternatively JAL.

I’m departing from the US and have 3 vaccination doses so I believe I currently won’t need to quarantine unless I test positive after arriving so I’m able to use domestic/public transportation.

All ANA international flights seem to arrive in Narita while domestic flights depart from Haneda. Actual final destination is Okazaki.

1) Would it be better to book a different airline for a domestic flight from Narita? Should I book as part of my main entry flight as a layover, separately in advance, or separately after I process through entry?

2) Is it easy to travel from Narita to Haneda with several luggage bags? If so, how much time should I allow myself for travel?

3) Would Shinkansen from Tokyo to Okazaki be better than flying to Kansai airport and taking a train or pick up service to Okazaki?

Thanks

    Yes. Just take Shinkansen to Nagoya and local train to Okazaki. You would need to transfer twice regardless if you arrive in Narita or in Kansai/Itami airport

    From Narita: Narita Express -> Tokyo -> Shinkansen -> Nagoya -> Local Train -> Okazaki

    From Kansai: Haruka -> Shin-Osaka -> Shinkansen -> Nagoya -> Local Train -> Okazaki

    From Itami: Limousine Bus -> Shin-Osaka -> Shinkansen -> Nagoya -> Local Train -> Okazaki

    If you can get domestic flight to Centrair airport it might be easier (but still no direct train/bus as far as I know), but if you still have to switch airport in Tokyo then it’s not worth it.

  2. Hi! I’m also going to Okazaki. The plan is to fly into Narita and send my luggage straight to the school. There’s a service at the airport–just learned about this recently and it seems a lot more convenient than trying to lug my suitcases around. I will keep my carry on with me in the meantime.

    I’ll either take shinkansen or a domestic flight to Chubu Intl’ (Nagoya) and head down to Okazaki from there. I’ll decide based on how long it takes me to clear customs.
