Bicycle Transportation

Hello, so I recently moved to Japan (near the Hachioji area) and I want to get a bicycle for transportation. Since I am only here for roughly 3 months, whats the best way to go about this situation? Are there affordable long term rental services or do I have to buy a bicycle?

I have also considered borrowing a bike from my friend, but I don’t know if that is allowed.

  1. You can borrow a bike, though I don’t think it’s insurance covers you. You may want to get some convenience store insurance if that is the case.

  2. If you don’t need a fancy bike, just buy a used one for dirt cheap from a local bike shop.

Disposal can be a pain in the arse though, you can ask the shop if they are willing to buy/dispose it after 3 months.

  3. ジモティー (an app kinda like American Craigslist) has cheap bikes for sale sometimes, if you want to check there

  4. There are bicycle rentals around town called Hello Cycling. You can rent them for as little as 15 minutes and pay around 100 yen or rent it for the whole day for 1200 yen. There isn’t a lot of stations in Hachioji, maybe another company dominates the area with rentals like Suica or others.
