I went to mistubishi bank today and they required a cellphone number for me to open an account. I was wondering if i could just use my family member’s number instead. Do they send any confirmation code during account creation or anything like that?
I hear that many foreigners will buy a temporary number to sign up then switch later. I can do this if i need to but i am wondering if i could just use my family member’s number since that is available.
For the record, i don’t have access to the family member’s phone right now as he is in America. It would be nice if i could just take his phone and use it but that won’t be viable for a month. So if they ask me for a confirmation code on the spot, i won’t be able to provide it. If they require confirmation code later in private, then I can do so when he wakes up at his timezone and messages me on skype.
Hope that makes sense

they do not require a “cellphone” number. It can be a landline number as well. And no, they don’t send any “messages” to it.
For people who just got here for school/etc and have no phone of their own yet, its recommended to use their school/work/whatever phone number when signing up. Once you have an account + phone, you can change contact information to your new number.
I used my roommate’s cellphone number and they didn’t check it. So, I think it would be okay for you to use your family member’s number. But it’s better to not mention that it’s not your number just in case.
When I first came here my immediate boss used their phone number, so it could be anyone. Had to remove it a year later when I left because I couldn’t use the app, so be careful.
Yes definitely don’t tell the bank it’s not your number
