Recommendation needed: How “dangerous” Sanbutsuji in Tottori really is?

Hello! Me and my mom (68) are traveling to Japan in early September. As Detective Conan Fans. We are planning to go to Tottori for two days to visit Conan Town, Manga Factory and Airport. But of course we don’t want to left Tottori local attractions unattended.

She likes the idea to go to Sanbutsuji but when I searched I stumbled upon the fact that it is called the most dangerous National treasure due to the climbing.

I saw a few YT videos of people that went there and they use quotation marks when mentioning the dangerous part and I felt curious.

So I have a two questions:

– the word “dangerous” is only a way to call it and it’s actually safe to climb? Or is it really dangerous but not as in life threatening dangerous?

– is it safe for a person my moms age (68) to climb? She is fit and healthy (even more so than I am) as well as brave. But it’s been like 10 years since she last climbed a mountain (we used to climb mountains a lot when I was a teenager)

  1. I’ll be climbing Mt. Mitoku in the near future too! Here’s what I’ve gathered based on my research so far:

Generally, Mt. Mitoku will be closed for climbing if it’s raining/snowing. It seems like September is the wettest month in Tottori(?) so if it rains, you can assume that the mountain will be closed. I think their website also shows whether you can climb the mountain or not so if you’re not sure, you can visit their website for daily/hourly updates. [https://mitokusan.jp/](https://mitokusan.jp/)

Staff will also check if your gear is suitable for the climb before entering.

I think the best way to determine whether your mom is fit to climb the mountain is to watch videos of people actually climbing the mountain. There are parts where you literally climb up using your all four limbs, but it seems that even people that don’t hike/climb mountains regularly are able to complete the climb (although they are quite out of breathe by the end of it). Coming down appears to be more challenging than going up.

Here’s a video that I think captures the climb the best: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4AWGiZ0Cy38&ab_channel=RoyandAimee](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4AWGiZ0Cy38&ab_channel=RoyandAimee)

  2. Planning to hike mitoku as well. Hopefully you’re able to 🙂

I’m aware the mountain is usually closed after heavy rain or snow, anyone know what the weather is like Mid December, and if I’ll be able to hike it?
